Liposuction

Liposuction has become one of the most commonly requested cosmetic surgery procedures at our practice.

During the liposuction procedure, excess fat is removed to shape and sculpt the body. While several different techniques exist for liposuction, generally, the procedure involves the suctioning of fat from predetermined areas of the body using an instrument called a cannula.

Liposuction has been effectively used to sculpt the abdomen, legs, buttocks and even the face and neck. Liposuction can also be used to treat gynecomastia (male breast enlargement).

Good candidates for liposuction are individuals in relatively good health with localized areas of excess fat. Liposuction should not be considered a sole means to weight loss.

Recovery times vary depending on the extent of the surgery.

Dr. Birnbaum wants all of his patients to go into their procedures with realistic expectations, and he will take the time to speak with you about your goals and expectations.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Stubborn, excess abdominal fat can be extremely frustrating. Many individuals find it difficult, if not impossible, to get the abdominal area to respond to diet and exercise and, subsequently, they turn to abdominoplasty as a means of achieving a firmer, flatter tummy.

Abdominoplasty, also referred to as "tummy tuck," involves the removal of excess fat and skin from the abdominal region. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and, depending on the extent of the surgery, can last anywhere from two to three hours.

New techniques for abdominoplasty have emerged during the last few years, and Dr. Birnbaum will speak with you at your consultation about which procedure will work best for you.

Generally, traditional abdominoplasty involves the following steps:

  • An incision is made from hipbone to hipbone.
  • Skin is separated from the abdominal wall.
  • Muscles are tightened by pulling them closer together.
  • The skin flap is stretched downward and the naval repositioned.
  • Excess skin and fat are removed.

Recovery times vary; however, for most patients, a full recovery can be expected in four to six weeks.

The results of abdominoplasty can be dramatic. Many people experience a renewed sense of self-confidence following tummy tuck surgery.

Body Lift (Post-Bariatric Surgery)

After a significant weight loss, whether from bariatric surgery or following pregnancy, many people find themselves seeking a solution for loose, excess skin that has lost its elasticity.

A body lift provides an excellent solution to excess, sagging skin. A body lift is designed to remove excess fat and skin from the torso and upper legs. Procedures vary from person to person, depending on individual needs. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually requires a one to two night stay in the hospital. During the surgery, an incision is made around the circumference of the lower body, and skin and excess fat are removed. Depending on the desired results, abdominal muscles can also be tightened at this time.

Most patients can resume normal activities four to six weeks following surgery.

A body lift is a complex operation that addresses several areas of the body. While the surgery is extensive, in the hands of a capable doctor, this procedure can produce some of the most dramatic results possible with cosmetic surgery.
